After serving four years in the United States Army, Ed graduated from the University of Montana and later, the Montana Law Enforcement Academy. Prior to being elected County Commissioner, Ed worked in the Montana State Auditor's office. At the State Auditor’s office, Ed served as Land Board Advisor to the Auditor and as the Senior Outreach Coordinator. He also served as the Chief of Enforcement for the Montana Securities Department and as an insurance fraud investigator. Ed earned his Masters of Public Administration from the University of Montana in 2007.

He and his wife, Sue, live in Helena with their two children: Eleanor and Sam. Sue formerly owned and operated Capitol Kids Day Care in Helena and now works for Governor Brian Schweitzer as an associate policy advisor to the Education Policy Advisor and the Policy Advisor on Families.
